How many words for IELTS Writing Tasks?

The IELTS writing test comprises of two tasks. You need to learn how the examiner counts your words and recommend the length of your IELTS letter, essay or report. Here is the information about the same:

What is the IELTS writing word count rule?

  • • IELTS writing has set a task of writing over 150 words for IELTS writing task 1 & 250 words for IELTS writing task 2.
  • • However, there is no upper limit to write.
  • • There will be penalty for writing under the word count.

What is recommended essay length?

  • • Always exceed the word count
  • • Examiner will check and count all your words.
  • • Aim for 170-190 words for task 1 and 270-290 words for task 2. It will ensure that you are safe with your word limit without adding too much irrelevant information.
  • • Don’t write too much. Focus on writing excellent English with proper organization of information.

Some other factors that will boost your score

  • Your handwriting

    - If the examiner finds it difficult to read your handwriting, your score will get affected seriously.

  • Memorized answer

    - If your essay is memorized or learned then it will not be accepted.

  • Limited answer

    - If you fail to answer the whole question and answer half of it, then you will not get band score in the above task.
